Mexican food is something people like to argue about. With so many regions, it leads to different "styles" of Mexican dishes.
Through my frequent visits to San Diego, I stumbled upon El Chingon in the Gaslamp District. Lively, colorful, and bustling with a younger crowd, it the sound of traditional Mexican music lured me in.
The decor is fun and bright, the waiters are friendly and always helpful with suggestions. Fortunately, I've never experienced a wait time, and I've usually gone for Happy Hour, which is from 3pm to 7pm. For Happy Hour, they offer specials on drinks as well as half off of all the entradas, or appetizers.  I always get the carne asada tacos and the customary plate of arroz con frijoles. For appetizers, do not pass up on the traditional corn on the cob with a twist, with mayo, cheese and chili! If you’re feeling adventurous, they have a hot Cheetos version as well.
After hours, the dance floor opens and the party begins. For a smaller venue, it gets crowded, but the crowds are always fun and hardly rowdy.
If you’re looking for genuine Mexican, many say this isn’t it. Personally, it’s not my mama’s cooking, but I keep coming back. If you’re looking for decent grub, a good crowd, and a great margarita or tequila-based cocktail, this is the spot for you.
